    Description

Pinocchio Story Book Preliminary Illustration Art Group of 2 (Walt Disney/D.C. Heath and Co., 1940). Boston-based publisher D.C. Heath and Company's storybook on Pinocchio came out in conjunction with the film in 1940. The illustrations in the book came from hand-painted nitrate cel setups that had a black inked line on a separate cel laid over the hand-painted cel. This process is highlighted on 149 in the great book, Ink and Paint: The Women of Walt Disney's Animation by Mindy Johnson. This is a pair of extremely rare original preliminary illustrations of The Blue Fairy with Pinocchio in the ending scene where he becomes a real boy. The separate drawing of the Fairy is a replacement for the version with Pinocchio. Art is in graphite on 12 field 5-peghole animation paper. Both are marked #51 page 89. Notes to Evelyn (Coates) are on both drawings. This is very rare studio artwork, created in graphite with red and blue pencil highlights. Image sizes are 7" x 4", and 4" for the Blue Fairy alone. Minor handling and edge wear. Fine condition. A print of the final version from the book is also included.
