Pinocchio Preliminary Concept Painting by Gustaf Tenggren (Walt Disney, 1940). A stunning concept piece by Gustaf Tenggren (1896 - 1970) from Walt Disney's classic film, Pinocchio. Arguably the greatest contribution Tenggren would make at the Walt Disney Studios would be the design of the backgrounds and the overall look of Pinocchio, where he introduced complex backgrounds to enhance the illusion of depth. Practically every element of Pinocchio was influenced by Tenggren's style in one way or another. The extraordinary piece offered in this lot is a preliminary concept painting showing Pinocchio's village at night, with only Gepetto's workshop showing signs of activity. Visible at the top of the painting is the wishing star. Tenggren's artwork consists of cut paper with graphite and pastel. This concept piece would be used to create the final background seen in sequence one, scene five. The final painted version can be found in the book, The Walt Disney Film Archives, The Animated Movies 1921-1968 by Taschen on page 96. It can also be seen on the Pinocchio page of the DisneyWiki Fandom website. This is one of the most impressive animation concept pieces that we have seen, absolutely gorgeous at 27" x 11" on a curve in a very substantial Plexiglas-fronted frame of 39" x 35.5". Frame sold as-is. The artwork is signed by Gustaf Tenggren in the bottom left. Fine condition.
