The New Spirit Key Master Production Background (Walt Disney, 1943). A rare Key Master production background of US War Ships, produced for the very first World War II propaganda film done by Walt Disney Studios, "The New Spirit," in cooperation with the Department of Treasury. It encouraged US citizens to pay their taxes, in order to help the War effort. Walt Disney insisted that the star of the film be the studio's biggest star at the time, Donald Duck. The film was released on 1/23/42 and was co-directed by Wilfred Jackson and Ben Sharpsteen. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Film. This is a hand-painted Master background of new War Ships, ready for launch. It appears about six minutes into the film, right after the slogan "Taxes to fight the Axis!" The ships are painted in oil, on three separate levels.
This piece was displayed at the 100th birthday of Walt Disney exhibit "Walt Disney: The Man and His Magic," and was also shown at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. The three trimmed cels are mounted to the background. Overall dimensions are approximately 12" x 15". There is tape reissue along the top and bottom borders, nowhere near images. The back is stamped Walt Disney Studios and "2608 Seq. 02.0 Sc. 13" is handwritten at the bottom. A clear cel is placed over the cel setup. An important piece of the "Disney Goes To War" effort. In Fine condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
