The Lion and the Mouse Painted Backgrounds Original Art Group of 2 (Terrytoons, 1943). This cartoon featured the seventh, and final, Super Mouse appearance; with his next short, he becomes Mighty Mouse with the now-familiar yellow and red costume. The story is an update on the old Aesop's Fables tale, with a subtle twist -- in this, the mouse becomes super after drinking from a discarded hard cider bottle! Here are two original 12 field hand-painted production backgrounds from this Mannie Davis-directed short. The first background is numbered Sc. 28 and shows two cliffs in the jungle that the Lion must jump across in escaping a pack of hunter's dogs; you can find it online at the 4:27 mark. The second, marked Sc. 37, shows the neck of the bottle on the ground; the Mouse is passed out under it when drops of cider wake him up to hear the hunters. It's at the 5:00 mark. These are beautiful gouache paintings on skimmed illustration board (the smooth art surface is peeled back from the rest of the board). They would make wonderful backgrounds for other cels, or just as vintage art for your walls. Very Good condition, with minor handling and edge wear.
