Orphan's Benefit Production Background (Walt Disney, 1934). The theater marquee reads "Mickey's Big Show: The Orphan's Benefit" in the opening scene of this historic Disney cartoon directed by Bert Gillet and released on 8/11/34. Popular with Mickey fans, this black and white short would later be remade in a color in 1941. It's historically notable as the first short to pair up Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. This cartoon also debuted recurring character, operatic singing hen, Clara Cluck. This is an original hand-painted production background and it can be seen in the opening of this cartoon around the 00:42 mark just before Mickey takes the stage. The scene shows the theater box teaming with unruly orphans firing sling shots and popping balloons. The detail is amazing right sown to the pile of tacks on the railing. The incredibly rare one-of-a-kind gouache background painted on 12 field background board is marked scene 3 field 5 with animator "Kinney" crossed out. The piece is in a 22" x 20" frame with a mat opening of 12" x 9". Minor handling and condition is Very Good. Frame is sold as-is.
