    Description

Invitation to Dance Production Cels and Painted Background Setup (MGM, 1952/56). From the feature film directed by and starred Gene Kelly, which featured three segments consisting of mime, music, and dance. The most impressive of the three featured an animated Sinbad the Sailor. This is a hand-painted Master production background featuring the dragon with cels of two swordsmen on each side. Each of the cels is trimmed and mounted to background. The mounting has let go and the cels are now loose and will need to be re-attached. The animation for this film was done by the MGM Studio team that included Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera. This film was made in 1952 but was not released until 1956. The dragon is a nice 6", and the swordsmen are 4". The background reads "Sc. 20X 17A-6" in the lower right corner. In Fine condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
