Eyvind Earle Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom Painted Background Color Key (Walt Disney, 1951). "The study of musical instruments is the subject for today" says Professor Owl to his class, in the opening sequence of this historic short, which was voted #29 in Jerry Beck's The 50 Greatest Cartoons book. It was directed by Ward Kimball and Charles Nichols and released on 11/10/53. It went on to win the Academy Award for best animated short. Eyvind Earle created the look for this cartoon and received screen credit as the film's Color Stylist. The title references are Toot = Horn, Whistle = Flute, Plunk = Guitar, and Boom = Drum. This is an original hand-painted background Color Key of the classroom chairs in Professor Owl's class, from the hand of Eyvind Earle (1916-2000). This scene can be observed in the intro section of the film, at about the :41 second mark. Painted edge-to-edge in gouache on 11" x 5" illustration board. Mr. Earle has signed the piece in bottom right corner. A Disney studio stamp is on the reverse. Framed with Plexiglas and matted with an opening of 12" x 6". Pinholes in the corners; Fine condition. An important and historical piece of artwork.
