    Description

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Gag/Concept Drawing (Walter Lantz, c. 1929/'30s). In 1928 Charles Mintz took the rights from Walt Disney for "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" and claimed him for Universal. The first non-Disney cartoon featuring Oswald was titled Hen Fruit and was released in 1929. Afterward, Walter Lantz took over the character in and made his first Oswald short Race Riot. Lantz eventually began to re-design the character over the years. This is a very early story gag concept drawing of Oswald prior to his re-design and still resembling his Disney Studios look which dates it to 1929 to the early '30s. It's rendered in graphite on 12 field 2-peghole paper that's stamped "Walter Lantz Prod." and initialed "W.L." An extra pair of pegholes has been added to the paper, presumably for use in a binder. The Lantz initials and Lantz stamp make this a very rare and important piece of animation history. It is in a mat 13.5" x 16" mat with an opening of 9" x 11.5". Minor handling and edge wear. Condition is Very Good.
