Olive's Sweepstake Ticket Popeye Production Cel On Production Background (Max Fleischer, 1941). Popeye goes to great lengths to retrieve Olive Oyl's winning sweepstakes ticket in this his 93rd theatrical cartoon. This is an original hand-inked, hand-painted production cel from this early black and white cartoon. Popeye walking on a flagpole with the ticket balancing on the end measures 5.5" x 3.5" on a cel that has been trimmed to blend with the contours of the hand-painted production background it's presented on. Painted in gouache on 3-peghole board, the background is from the 1937 Popeye short I Never Changes my Altitude and can be seen at the 5:25 mark. It's a beautifully rendered grayscale background painted with incredible detail. This particular cartoon featured a lot of multiplane backgrounds and this is one of the few scenes filmed in single dimension. The production cel and background work flawlessly together. This is a very rare original production setup from the one animation studio that gave Disney a run for its money in the early days. The piece is in a 21" x 18" mat with a 15" x 12" opening. There is a hairline crack in the paint on Popeye's shirt, the background shows toning, and has pinholes in the corners. Condition is Very Good.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
