Mulan General and Shang Presentation Cel Setup on Production Background (Walt Disney, 1998). The General wishes his new Captain (and son) Shang "Good Luck" before leading his troops up the Tung Shao Pass. This film was Disney's 36th animated feature film, and the first to be made primarily at the Florida Disney/MGM Studios. Hand-painted cels weren't used in its production, but hand-painted backgrounds were. A limited number of these original backgrounds were offered for sale to the public at The Art of Mulan auction held in New York City on March 6th, 1999. Original production backgrounds came complete with hand-painted presentation cels created from archived production drawings by the Disney Ink and Paint department. This is lot #72 from that sale and it features an oversized hand-painted 2-cel setup of Shang and the General who together measure 15" x 11". The cels are over the original hand-painted pan background from scene 62.49 Sequence 8 which appears at the 32:39 mark. It's a magnificent image from a film so popular that a live-action remake was produced over 20 years later. The art is in its original 28.5 x 20' Plexiglas front frame from the auction and has a Certificate of Authenticity on back. Condition is Fine and frame is sold as-is.
