Description
Mr. Bug Goes to Town Lowlands Village 53" Pan Master Background (Fleischer Studios, 1941). "I told you we belong in the garden, oh it's beautiful!" The conniving C. Bagley Beetle saunters into the Lowlands with devious plots of matrimony in mind, but ends up making an expeditious retreat back through the village when he overhears some scheme-thwarting news. Offered in this lot in an astonishingly large 53" pan Master background featuring the Lowlands insect village from the stonework wall all the way to the Honey Shop, created for Fleischer Studios' Mr. Bug Goes to Town (also known as Hoppity Goes to Town and Bugville). Originally previewed to positive reception on December 5, 1941, the studio's second and final feature-length film suffered a delayed public release until the following February amidst America's entry into WWII. Under the impression Mr. Bumble and Hoppity had been dispatched in a garden accident, Beetle can be spotted pretentiously strolling through town with the right half of the background spotted beginning near the 38:28 mark, then again moments later as he dashes back out of the village with the full background on display as the camera pans right to left to follow his withdrawal. This capacious Master background has been skillfully hand-painted in gouache with mixed media details featuring several village homes rendered to an image area of 51.5" x 8" on background board trimmed to 53.5" x 9.5". It has been matted to an overall size of 56.25" x 13.25" with an aperture of 50.75" x 7.75"; mat sold as-is. Obscured by the mat, the margins include several animator's notes, the production code F9-1, and scene numbers 3-44 and 3-46 as well as a trimmed-away piece including a studio approval stamp signed by Fleischer scenic artist Robert Little (1902 - 1994). The background features edge-trimmed areas where additional underlays would have been used to give the illusion of depth, and also exhibits professional restoration with a new paper backing. With typical handling and edge wear including the noted trimming and restoration with minor surface wear/debris, overall this incredible and vast Master background of the Lowlands is in Very Good condition.More information about Fleischer Studios.
