    Description

Mother Goose Goes Hollywood Production Cel Signed to Groucho Marx by Walt Disney Courvoisier Setup (Walt Disney, 1938). "My fiddlers, goody goody!" says giggling Hugh Herbert as Old King Cole in this fan-favorite, Academy Award-nominated short, directed by Wilfred Jackson and originally released on 12/23/38. The Fiddlers Three are of course Groucho, Harpo, and Chico -- the Marx Brothers, in this classic hand-painted production cel Courvoisier setup. Mother Goose Goes Hollywood was a wild mix of nursery rhymes and gags featuring film stars of the era. While the 1930s saw no shortage of zany comedy teams, few can deny that Groucho and his brothers were among the funniest ever to appear on the Silver Screen. Marx Brothers movies like Duck Soup, A Day at the Races, and A Night at the Opera are all frantically paced exercises in silliness, and repeated showings on television and home video releases have created many new generations of fans. This prized Courvoisier setup would be of great value simply for that reason, and it truly is a spectacular piece. Little wonder that Walt Disney himself chose this piece to present to Groucho, complete with a personalized inscription and signature (which has been verified as authentic). The mat inscription is in red Conté crayon.
This setup, which had hung on the wall in Groucho's home, was originally sold at the Groucho Marx Estate auction. The cel is in its original Courvoisier cream-colored mat with script notation "The Marx Brothers" in the lower left. You can find the cel in the cartoon at the 1:34 mark, as Old King Cole calls for his "fiddlers three." The mat opening measures 10.5" x 8.25", and the setup is in its simple wooden glass-front frame measuring 19.75" x 18.75". Frame is sold as-is. Cel condition is Very Good with minor waviness along the outer edges. Read more about the great Groucho in the extended description at HA.com/7216.

    More Information:

Groucho Marx (1890 - 1977), with his trademark greasepaint mustache and eyebrows, glasses, cigar, and funny stooped-over walk, will forever be one of Hollywood's most recognizable comedians. His work on stage, screen, radio, and television delighted millions, and films starring the Marx Brothers continue to be shown and appreciated all over the world. Just as Walt Disney's animated films will be enjoyed for as long as people crave entertainment, so will the Marx Brothers movies and Groucho's solo work (his long-running TV series You Bet Your Life is still being shown in reruns on various streaming services). For fans of both Walt Disney and Julius "Groucho" Marx, this humble bit of animation art will be the prize of a lifetime.
