Mother Goose Goes Hollywood Marx Brothers Set of 2 Animation Drawings (Walt Disney, 1938). "My fiddlers, goody, goody, goody!" Their instruments in tow, court musicians Chico, Groucho, and Harpo all march in to perform for Old King Cole (Hugh Herbert). After a short introductory fanfare, the brothers make ready to play - and promptly smash their fiddles across their knees - in typical Marx fashion. This hilarious Disney short poked fun at the reigning stars of the day, and starred everyone from Kathryn Hepburn, to Charlie McCarthy! Much less sentimental than the typical Disney outing, this short provided a chance for animators to really let loose, with some truly outrageous caricature and some zany sight-gags. (It was no accident that Ward Kimball contributed animation!) Wilfred Jackson directed this wonderful snapshot of 1930s Tinseltown; it was released on December 23, 1938. These drawings can be seen near the 1:25 point in the film, as the three "musicians" present themselves in court. All three are immediately identifiable: Groucho with his requisite cigar, Harpo with top hat and curly yellow hair, and swarthy Chico with his Tyrolean cap. Though appearing in a group on-screen, the three brothers are split between two sheets of paper; Groucho leads, on his own drawing, measuring at roughly 6" x 4", and Harpo and Chico measure nearly 6" x 6.5" together. All are rendered in graphite and colored pencil on 12 field 5-peghole animation paper. Drawings have some slight toning to the edges. In Fine condition.Auction Info

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.View More Testimonials
