Description
The Herculoids and Super Friends Model Sheet Original Art by Alex Toth Group of 2 (Hanna-Barbera, 1967/1973). Alex Toth (1928 - 2006) began his artistic career drawing superhero comic book stories in the late 1940s, before moving on to newspaper comic strips and more comic books. But perhaps some of his greatest work (at least to animation fans) was doing character design for Hanna-Barbera. Here are two original model sheet drawings done for H-B. The first, dated September '67, was done for the animated adventure series The Herculoids, showing a revised sheet of images featuring Zaygot's spaceship, from the episode "Attack from Space." The artwork is on a sheet of 12 field animation paper, with the main image taped onto the sheet; art is in ink, marker, color pencil, and white paint, with hand-lettered text above in red marker. The second sheet, dated 8/7/1973, is a detailed set of images for the Super Friends first season episode "The Ultra Beam." It's in black marker and red pencil on paper measuring 15" x 10", and includes a small image of Superman in action. Both sheets are hand-signed by Alex Toth.
