Description

The Flintstones Betty Rubble and Dino Published Original Model Sheet Art by Ed Benedict (Hanna-Barbera, 1960). This may be one of the rarest pieces of Flintstones art you'll ever get the chance to own. While developing Hanna-Barbera's new animated series about the humorous misadventures of two prehistoric families, Joe Barbera tasked Ed Benedict with designing some characters and backgrounds that would strike a perfect balance between simplicity (for the sake of finances) and compelling design. The studio was used to making cartoons on a limited budget, but The Flintstones was Hanna-Barbera's first foray into animating for an adult audience, who would likely be pickier about the artistic quality of the media than kids. Benedict managed to accomplish what he set out to do, developing the characters of The Flintstones with simple, modern designs that still effectively communicated humor, emotion, and movement. Benedict established the first official designs of most characters in The Flintstones, and he put together model sheets by compiling all of his best drawings of the characters on a single sheet, giving the show's animator's a guide that they could go back to for each character's anatomy, personality, and proportion. This spectacularly rare piece is the original, hand-drawn, published model sheet for the lovely Betty Rubble and the Flintstone family pet, Dino. The piece was created before the show ever premiered, as evidenced by a hidden gem you'll see if you take a closer look. This fantastic model sheet is hand-titled "The Gladstones," a title used for only a short while during the early development of the series, before the creators eventually settled on "The Flintstones." Originally glued on top of this title but now affixed to the inside of the shadowbox is the more familiar title, "The Flintstones," hand-written on another trimmed piece of paper. This piece is affixed so that you can see both the original and the revised title, a nice detail that pays homage to the series' history. On this model sheet, we have four original, hand-drawn images of a full-figure Betty Rubble, as well as six full-figure images of Dino, the Flintstone family's pet Snorkasaurus. Dino has been present with the Flintstone family until the beginning, appearing in the opening credits of the very first episode of the Flintstones despite only having his official debut in Episode 4. The drawings are trimmed to image and affixed with glue and tape to a sheet measuring about 16.5" x 13.5". The piece is signed on its lower edge by its artist, Ed Benedict (1912 - 2006). The piece is nicely displayed in a Plexiglas-fronted shadowbox measuring 18.25" x 15.25" x 2". This piece was featured in the 1994 book The Flintstones: A Modern Stone Age Phenomenon. This historical and important piece is in Good condition, with some handling and wear from age and use, including age-related toning, some staining, and some creasing. There are a few tears on the pasted drawings. The shadowbox is sold as-is.
