Description

Superman Height Comparison Model Sheet Original Art (Max Fleischer, 1941). Comic book hero Superman was a hit with his very first appearance (Action Comics #1, 1938). This "strange visitor from another planet" easily made the jump to newspaper comic strips and as a popular radio drama, so it was no surprise Max Fleischer was interested in making Superman his next animated star. Here is a very rare early model sheet drawing of Superman, Lois Lane, and Clark Kent, done for a size comparison chart; it was most likely done during production of the very first short, Superman (aka The Mad Scientist), which was first shown in theaters on 9/26/1941. The art is in graphite (with brown pencil highlights on Superman and Lois) on animation paper measuring approximately 15.5" x 1.75". Figure sizes are all pretty close (8.5"-9"), making us think these images would be photographed and arranged with each character in their proper size, lined up together for a printed sheet. As it is, it's a wonderful fragment of animation history! The paper is somewhat brittle around the outer edges, and shows stains from an old framing; it also has age-related paper toning. Condition is Fair.
