Description
Space Mouse Studio Model Sheet Original Art (Walter Lantz, 1960). Here's a real rarity, the original artwork for a Walter Lantz Studio 12 field model sheet featuring a character with an interesting back story. Space Mouse was the title of a 1959 Lantz cartoon featuring new characters Hickory, Dickory, and Doc, about NASA's experiments with two mice. Western Publishing owned the rights to publish comic books starring Lantz characters but wanted more; when editor Chase Craig found out Lantz was preparing a cartoon called Space Mouse, he thought this would be about a "Buck Rogers" type character and worked up a few pages before finding out the cartoon was not what he thought. Craig showed Lantz the new Space Mouse comic and Lantz agreed to add his name and own the rights to the character for animation, allowing the comic books to be published. Space Mouse only appeared in one theatrical cartoon, The Secret Weapon (1960) before the studio decided not to continue with a series, but Space Mouse lived on for several years in the comic books! This VERY rare original model sheet for The Secret Weapon features six images of Space Mouse drawn in graphite over red pencil, with three of the images rendered as full figures. These are wonderful images that match the character as first seen in the comics, with the largest image measuring approximately 3.75" x 5.25". The sheet is in Good to Very Good condition with a pasted-on copyright strip and some handling/edge wear, as well as mild age-related paper toning.Auction Info
