Description

Rocky and His Friends Mr. Peabody and Sherman Studio Model Sheet Print (Jay Ward, c. 1959). Peabody's Improbable History, the second feature developed for the Rocky and His Friends series is represented here by an authentic studio-used model sheet print of the two stars, talking dog Mr. Peabody and his "pet boy," Sherman. Jay Ward had originally conceived Rocky and Bullwinkle as a five-minute cartoon to be sold to children's shows but found out after the contracts were signed that the network wanted a 30-minute program, so other ideas were needed to fill out the extra time. Cartoonist Ted Key of Hazel fame came up with the idea of a small boy who invented a time-traveling belt and collar so his dog could join him, but Ward and Bill Scott turned the concept around by making the dog a genus inventor with an adopted "pet" boy that became Peabody and Sherman. This early model sheet, with art by Pete Burness, features three sets of turn-around views of the pair with an overall image area of approximately 10" x 9.75"; the original artwork is pictured in Darrell Van Citters' book The Art of Jay Ward Productions, on page 148 (we've included prints of the page and the book's cover). The sheet is printed on Agfa Copyrapid direct transfer paper measuring 16.5" x 11.5". The condition is Good to Very Good with minor handling, edge wear including small tears, and age-related paper toning.
From the Darrel Van Citters Collection.
