Description
Mickey Mouse and Pluto Character Study Drawing (Walt Disney, 1930s/40s). Mickey and Pluto come to life in this 12 field 5-peghole character study drawing with one full figure pose and seven incredible expressions! All are rendered in graphite and notably feature Mickey with both solid eyes and pupils. The mouse was given pupils in a beloved redesign created by Disney Legend Fred Moore, which was then used in the Mickey Mouse comic strip by Floyd Gottfredson in 1938. The design first appeared in Disney animation in Mickey's Surprise Party, though it didn't become official until The Pointer was released in July of 1939. This drawing was likely made during that transition and would have been created to allow the artist to practice the characters on model in different perspectives, emotions, and styles. They may also have used it as reference later in the process. Something like this was incredibly important in a production with multiple artists, especially when the characters were transitioning into a new style. Mickey and Pluto measure about 9.75'' x 8.25'' on the page combined and are marked 6/13 in the lower right. Fair to Good condition overall with some edge and handling wear, faint folds, and light age-related toning.Auction Info
