Description
Grin and Share It Droopy Original Character Study Drawing with Assorted Droopy Studio-Printed Model Sheet Group of 17 (MGM, c. 1940s-50s). Loosely rendered but highly recognizable, Tex Avery's Droopy is presented in this original character study drawing for one of his final MGM shorts Grin and Share It, joined by a vast collection of 17 additional studio-printed model sheets from several of his other features. Giving stark contrast to Avery's typically loud and wacky characters, the now-famously monotone basset hound lethargically ambled to a big screen debut of March 20, 1943 with his first short Dumb-Hounded, and would go on to be featured in a total of 24 films until MGM fully shuttered their in-house animation studio by 1958. With Avery's departure from MGM in 1953, Grin and Share It would be directed by Michael Lah with a release of May 17, 1957. The original character study for that feature has been hand-drawn in graphite with multiple full and partial-figures spanning the 12 field animation sheet nearly edge to edge, and may have been created by Ed Benedict who served as both character designer and layout artist for this film; Benedict worked with both Avery and Hanna-Barbera's units at MGM before following the latter to their newly-founded studio in 1957. The remaining 17 model sheets and others like them were printed at the studio primarily on photographic paper and distributed in small quantities amongst the animators to ensure continuity for Droopy and his co-stars' character models. With overall sizes ranging from 12.25" x 10.5" to 15" x 11.5", this lot includes 2 additional print sheets for Grin and Share It (1957, #312); 1 sheet for Dixieland Droopy (1954, #282); 3 sheets for Out Foxed with the working title "The Fox Hunt" (1949, #187); 3 untitled sheets featuring Spike for Wags to Riches (1949, #196); 5 sheets for SeƱor Droopy with the working title "Bull Fight" (1949, #185); 1 sheet for Northwest Hounded Police (1946, #144); 1 sheet for Wild and Woolfy (1945, #134); and 1 sheet for his debut feature Dumb-Hounded (1943, #92). The studio-printed model sheets exhibit expected handling and edge wear including age-related toning, fold creases, pin holes, edge tearing, and minor surface wear/staining, overall Fair to Good condition. The original character study exhibits faint age-related toning and minor corner creasing, overall Very Good condition with typical handling and edge wear.Auction Info
