It tells the story of a small handful of surviving humans on a devastated Earth mostly submerged in water, and its themes of war and humanity's effect on the natural world would become prevalent in Miyazaki's future films. In addition to directing the series, Hayao Miyazaki contributed many character designs and storyboards, making it likely that some of these pages were copied from original art by the hand of the lauded animator.
