Description
Dixie Wolf Original Model Sheet Drawing with Studio Printed Model Sheet Pair (MGM, 1956). "Man alive, that teacher sure ain't got no patience. Ain't nothing wrong with modern education. Ain't nothing wrong with our youngsters neither." Created for his scholarly appearance in the MGM Droopy short Blackboard Jumble comes this matching pair of Dixie Wolf model sheets including the hand-drawn original and a studio print made from it, as well as an additional studio-printed model sheet from the film. Taking up the mantel left empty by Tex Avery's departure from MGM in 1953, this short was directed by Michael Lah with a release of October 4, 1957 a scant ten films before MGM would completely shutter its in-house animation studio. Although Avery created Dixie Wolf, all four of the shorts to feature this Southern canine would debut after his unit was dissolved. This hand-drawn sheet has been rendered in graphite over red pencil with 12 closeup headshot images of Dixie Wolf ranging in height from 1.25" to 3" and spanning nearly the entire 12 field animation sheet. Both accompanying studio prints measure 12.75" x 10.5" overall with the matching sheet featuring similarly sized images and the additional sheet bearing the title and production #316 alongside full-figure images of 6.5" tall Dixie and the former teacher bulldog flanking a 3" tall childishly wide-eyed Droopy. All three sheets bear a matching date of 3/15/56. The original model sheet may have been created by Ed Benedict who served as both character designer and layout artist for this film; Benedict worked with both Avery and Hanna-Barbera's units at MGM before following the latter to their newly-founded studio in 1957. With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning throughout with a vertical fold crease and corner pinholes to the studio print, overall this incredible matching pair is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
