Astro Boy Dr. Packidermus J. Elefun, Astro Girl, Victor Percival Pompous and Astro Boy Model Sheet (Mushi Productions, c. 1963-66). The historical significance of Astro Boy can't possibly be overstated. Created by Osamu Tezuka (1928 - 1989), the man revered in Japan as the "God of Manga", Astro Boy is the first popular animated Japanese television series that embodied the aesthetic that later became familiar worldwide as anime. Tezuka, drawing influence from the designs of Walt Disney and Max Fleischer Studios, invented the distinctive and expressive large-eye style that would become a mainstay in Japanese cartoons. This approach to design in animation would prove definitive in the decades that followed, and anime would bear a clear distinction from the cartoons of the rest of the world. This unbelievably rare original model sheet from the production of Astro Boy is rendered in graphite on 11" x 8" 3-peghole animation paper. It features Dr. Packidermus J. Elefun (know in Japanese as Professor Ochanomizu), Astro Girl (Uran), Victor Percival Pompous (Higeoyaji), and Astro Boy (Atom) among others. This piece can be seen on page 53 of the German Film Institute's gallery exhibition book Ga-Netchu! The Manga Anime Syndrome. The sheet shows minor handling and edge wear with some tearing and age-related toning on the edges. The sheet has been folded into vertical thirds, and there is a sketch with notes in Japanese on the back. Classic anime model sheets like this one are extremely rare artifacts, and the condition of this historical piece is Good.
