Description
Alice in Wonderland "Golden Afternoon" Singing Flowers Hand-Drawn Model Sheet Group of 7 by Ken O'Connor (Walt Disney, 1951). "Girls. We shall sing Golden Afternoon. That's about all of us." The vibrant garden of anthropomorphic flowers who perform "Golden Afternoon" in the 1951 animated adaptation of Alice in Wonderland make a shining appearance in this group of 7 original model sheets by skilled hand of long-time layout artist Disney Legend Ken O'Connor (1908 - 1998). Known for his skill in addressing perspective problems, O'Connor's gridded layouts for the impressive "March of the Cards" sequence were instrumental in assisting his fellow animators' understanding of the cards' perspective while moving thought the hilly landscape. Here he has hand-drawn models for nearly every type of flower present in Sequence 6.5, seen beginning near the 26:20 timestamp which includes the enchanting "Golden Afternoon" musical number. Rendered in graphite and colored pencil across 5 sheets of 16 field animation paper are model drawings for the Red Rose (front and back views); the Iris with two White Daisies; the White Rose as a bud and fully open flower; a Morning Glory, shy Violet, Pansy, Dandelion, and Tiger Lily (prior to the spots being converted to stripes); and Tulip #1, Tulip #2, a Daffodil, a pair of Pink Bonnets, and a White Lily, with each sheet noted as Seq 6.5 Models for production 2069. Joining the model sheets are a pair of colored pencil studies of orchids (one on 12 field animation paper and the other on 16 field), a flower that notably isn't featured in the final cut of the film. Across the lot, the sheets feature image areas ranging from 5.75" x 7" to 13.5" x 9.5" and include a wealth of notes. With typical handling and edge wear including age-related toning, fold creases, surface wrinkles with minor edge tearing, and faint surface wear/smudging, overall this fantastically floral collection is in Good condition. From the Ken O’Connor Archive.
