Description
Disney Ephemera - Assortment of 32 Photos, The Reluctant Dragon Film Frame Group of 4, and Fantasia Model Sheet Print by Modeler/Theme Park Designer Bob Jones (Walt Disney, c. 1940s). A rare behind-the-scenes trove from Walt Disney's Fantasia, this assortment comprises 32 vintage black-and-white photographs documenting model maker Bob Jones at work alongside concept art and model-sheet images. One of the photos features Walt-himself as he visits the model department. Photo sizes range from 4" x 5" up to 8" x 10". Additionally, there are four frames of footage from The Reluctant Dragon, two of the cuckoo clock model and two of studio actor Robert Benchley which are found roughly at 27:46 as a he corrects the time on Geppetto's cuckoo clock. Also included is a 14" x 11" studio model-sheet print dated 1938; it features a racially insensitive portrayal reflective of its era and is presented here for historical study and context. Jones-puppeteer, sculptor, and model maker-helped define Disney's model-driven approach that gave Fantasia its striking dimensionality. After starting as a production cameraman on Snow White, he joined Joe Grant's Character Model Department, building reference miniatures and sculpting maquettes that animators used to stage forms from any angle. Several images capture table-top sets, lighting tests, and character studies that reveal how physical models informed the film's elaborate choreography and camera moves. Jones later applied the same craft to early Disneyland hardware, translating drawings into ride vehicles. An illuminating production archive and a prize for scholars and collectors alike.
