Description

Bambi Assortment of Reference Material From Joe Grant's Model Department Compiled by Modeler/Theme Park Designer Bob Jones (Walt Disney, c. 1930s/40s). An extraordinary cache from Joe Grant's Character Model Department, this reference assortment was compiled by model maker Bob Jones to guide the animation of Bambi. Centerpiece is a 46-page binder of 5-peghole, 16-field animation sheets titled "Skeleton Action of the Deer," charting the cervid skeleton in motion-running, leaping, tumbling, rising, sitting, and reclined poses-so animators could stage anatomy accurately from any angle. Complementing it is a ten-page studio document addressing a notorious problem: keeping antlers solid and believable as the head pivots, with notes on tilt, foreshortening, and perspective maintenance across scene cuts. A 6" x 4" production photograph of the wooden deer model used by the artists rounds out the set. Prepared during research that led Disney to depict Bambi as a white-tailed deer (familiar to U.S. audiences) rather than the book's European roe deer, these materials exemplify the studio's model-driven method Jones championed-building reference tools that gave drawings weight, rhythm, and consistency. A rare toolkit illuminating how observation became performance in Disney's Golden Age. A rare find for animators and collectors alike. In vintage Good condition with expected aging and wear including water stains on the binder cover.
