Description

Mickey's Mellerdrammer Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse Animation Drawing (Walt Disney, 1933). "Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton, old times there are not forgotten! Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land!" Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse stage an ill-advised backyard production of Uncle Tom's Cabin in the Wilfred Jackson-directed theatrical short Mickey's Mellerdrammer. Released on 3/18/1933, Mickey's Mellerdrammer is fraught with the political incorrectness prevalent in the 1930s, with Mickey donning blackface in the tradition of 19th-century minstrel shows. A historical find from a less culturally considerate era of animation, this original animation drawing was created for the moment seen at the 2:19 mark of the film. Mickey and Minnie are seen dancing to the tune of Daniel Decatur Emmett's "Dixie's Land," a de facto national anthem of the Confederacy originating in the minstrel shows of the 1850s. This drawing is rendered in graphite on 12 field 2-peghole animation paper, and Mickey and Minnie measure an overall 5.25" x 4". Minor handling and edge wear with light age-related toning, and the piece is numbered 231 in the lower right. The condition is Very Good.
