Description

Mickey Mouse Early Color Model Cel and Drawing (Walt Disney, c. 1930s). Here is a rare hand-inked, hand-painted trimmed nitrate color model cel of Mickey Mouse. It is believed to be one of the first color Mickey Mouse cels, thought to be used for Model reference and used in publications. Mickey Mouse made his first color appearance in a 1932 Academy Award theatrical film Parade of the Award Nominees. He had yellow gloves and shoes and wore green trunks. His first official color theatrical short would not come until 1935, The Band Concert. Mickey's early color design was first seen in foreign publication pieces. We see Mickey with yellow gloves and yellow shoes in Hardie Gramatky's art for the first Mickey Mouse Coloring Book. This same color design and pie-slice eyes was seen in Wilfred Houghton's design for the British Mickey Mouse Annual. His yellow gloves and shoes and pie-eyes were seen also in most all European publications. Many examples of this are seen in the recently released Taschen book Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse -The Ultimate History on pages 91 - 115. The early Mickey design with yellow gloves and shoes and the pie-slice eyes also was seen in many theatrical one sheets. Some examples include Mickey's Nightmare, Touchdown Mickey, and The Wayward Canary to name a few. This nitrate cel is trimmed to 11" x 9", with a great Mickey Mouse full-figure image size of 5". A matching 12 field 2-peghole drawing is included. Cel and drawing are housed in one common mat measuring 29" x 13.5" with two oval cuts of 9"; the border of the drawing reads "Painted black only" under the mat. Lifting the mat shows some light-struck paper toning. This is one of the earliest Mickey Mouse color cels we have offered. A color copy of the Taschen book cover showing this design of Mickey is included for comparison. The early nitrate Mickey Mouse color model cel was from the collection of a longtime studio employee. Good condition.
