    Description

Mary Poppins Production Background (Walt Disney, 1964). "Wind's in the east...mist coming in. Like something is brewing, about to begin. Can't put my finger...on what lies in store, but I fear what's to happen all happened before." The magical, musical Mary Poppins was released to tremendous critical praise on 8/27/64 and famously nominated for thirteen Academy Awards, making it the most Oscar-nominated Disney film in history. The picture earned five Academy Awards: Julie Andrews for Best Actress, Peter Ellenshaw and Hamilton Luske for Best Visual Effects, and Richard and Robert Sherman for Best Original Music Score. But it was the memorable animated sequence that had everyone talking including the prickly P.L. Travers who insisted that the film contain NO animation. When sidewalk artist, Bert invites Mary Poppins and her two young charges, Jane and Michael, to accompany him on an outing in one of his sidewalk chalk-drawings, they step into an animated fantasy world of painted backgrounds inhabited by a wide array of Disney characters. Fun Fact: The hand we see on film creating the chalk drawings is not Dick Van Dyke but rather the hand of Disney Legend, Peter Ellenshaw! Offered in this lot is an extremely rare hand-painted background from the brilliantly animated sequence. Al Dempster, Don Griffin, Art Riley, and Bill Layne make-up the team of background painters on Mary Poppins. The piece measures 16" x 12.5", rendered in gouache on 16 field, 3-peghole background board. The artwork is in a mat of 20" x 16". Mild production handling. Condition is Fine.
