Mary Blair "The Lady in Red" Painting Original Art (c. 1930s). In John Canemaker's 2014 book Magic, Color, Flair: The World of Mary Blair, there is a chapter called "Learning the Rules." In his 2003 book The Art and Flair of Mary Blair: An Appreciation, the first chapter is called "The Watercolor Years." Both chapters go into great detail about Blair and her early work in this period. She was then known as Mary Robinson. She received a scholarship to prestigious Chouinard Institute in Los Angeles in the fall of 1931, and became a member of the California Watercolor Society. This is a rare early watercolor and ink painting on 32.5" x 26.5" art paper called "The Lady in Red." It is featured on page 47 of Magic, Color, Flair: The World of Mary Blair. This painting also has the provenance of being exhibited at the Walt Disney Family Museum for the exhibit of the same name, from March 13 to September 7, 2014. This is a stunning, large painting, with characters taking up 16" and 17". A very important early painting by Mrs. Blair, hand-signed in the bottom right corner. There is a slight fade to her signature. The painting is framed with glass for an overall size of 26" x 32". One of the single most important pieces we have come across from her early watercolor painting era, and pre-Disney days. Frame is sold as-is, painting condition is Very Good. This lot will have to ship from Dallas to the winning bidder.More Information:
