Mary Blair Song of the South Plein Air Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1946). "Are you hard of hearing? I said Howwwdddyyy!" exclaims a perturbed Br'er Rabbit upon encountering a mysterious and mute stranger. This is an original concept/color key painting of Br'er Rabbit as he first meets the Tar-Baby. In John Canemaker's book The Art and Flair of Mary Blair: An Appreciation he writes "In the fall of 1944, Mary Blair spent a week in Atlanta, and nearby rural Georgia locations doing preliminary research for Song of the South. Her plein air paintings of Georgia's cotton fields, dusty red roads, wooden shacks, plantations and burning sunsets, were adapted in high-key hues, into the Song of the South animated sequences." Just as described a red clay road bisects this wonderful painting by the legendary Disney artist and color stylist, Mary Blair (1911 -1978). This key scene is rendered in gouache on board that measures approximately 10" x 9". Minor handling with pinholes in corner. Condition is Very Good.
