Description
Mary Blair Song of the South Original Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1946). "Whatever you do Br'er Fox....PLEASE don't bring me in that Briar Patch!" pleads Br'er Rabbit to Br'er Fox after he is captured. This film combined live action and animation. It was based on Joel Chandler Harris' Uncle Remus Stories. It debuted in his home town of Atlanta in 1946. Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) received credit as Color Stylist on this film. In the book, The Art and Flair of Mary Blair: An Appreciation by John Canemaker, he writes "In the fall of 1944, Mary Blair spent a week in Atlanta and nearby rural Georgia locations doing preliminary research for Song of the South. Her plein air paintings of Georgia cotton fields, dusty red roads, wooden shacks, plantation mansions and burning sunsets were adapted in high color hues in to the Song of the South animated sequences." This is an outstanding Mary Blair original concept/Color Key painting showing a captured Br'er Rabbit with Br'er Bear and Br'er Fox. Gouache on board, image size of 10.5" x 9.5". Circular painting style done for many of her paintings for this film as well as So Dear to My Heart. Great three-character painting, with a beautiful array of color. Minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in corners. Overall, in Very Good condition.Auction Info
