    Description

Mary Blair Song of the South Georgia Orchard Color Key Background Painting (Walt Disney, 1946). "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay, my oh my what a wonderful day!" sings James Baskett as Uncle Remus in this Walt Disney feature film that combined live action and animation. It was based on the collection of Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler. This film premiered in Atlanta, Georgia. Mary Blair received credit as Color Stylist and Background Artist on this film, along with Claude Coats. In the book, The Art and Flair of Mary Blair: An Appreciation, John Canemaker writes, "In the fall of 1944, Blair spent a week in Atlanta, and nearby rural Georgia locations during preliminary research for Song of the South. Her plein air paintings of Georgia cotton fields, dusty red roads, wooden shacks, plantation mansions, and burning sunsets were adapted in high-key hues into Song of the South's special animated sequences." This is an outstanding and important Mary Blair Color Key background for the "Zip-a-Dee-Do-Da" song sequence with Uncle Remus. This song won an Academy Award! You can see similar trees, fences, and roads in the opening sequence. Art is in gouache on illustration board measuring 10" x 8". Tack holes in all four corners with minor handling and edge wear. Very Good condition.
