Mary Blair Song of the South Georgia Forest Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1946). Mary Blair received credit on this film as Color Stylist and for backgrounds, along with Claude Coats. John Canemaker writes in his book The Art and Flair of Mary Blair: An Appreciation, "In the fall of 1944, Blair spent a week in Atlanta, and nearby rural Georgia locations doing preliminary research for Song of the South. Her plein air paintings of Georgia cotton and cotton fields, dusty red roads, wooden shacks, plantation mansions, and burning sunsets were adapted, in high-key hues, into Song of the South's special effects sequences." This is a rare concept painting by Mary Blair (1911-1978) of the Georgia forest with a captured Br'er Rabbit with Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear silhouettes in the far distance. Extraordinary gouache painting on 12 field 5-peghole background board, with a stunning palette of color. Painted area takes up 4" x 8". Minor scuffing and handling wear on non-painted area, otherwise, Very Good condition.
