Mary Blair Song of the South Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1946). Created for the color and styling of Song of the South, here is an exceptional original concept painting by the hand of Disney Legend Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). This is very rare live action concept work from Mary Blair, most commonly known for her work on animation color keys. Blair's Song of the South sketches suggest ideas for costumes, settings, and mood for both live-action and animation sequences of the film, and she made incredible concept paintings in both camps that ultimately inform each other in the final product. Similar pieces to this one can be seen on page 30-31 of John Canemaker's The Art and Flair of Mary Blair. Uncle Remus, Johnny and Ginny are seen here among the former slaves working on a cotton plantation. Often criticized for depicting the plantation setting as idyllic and glorified, Song of the South has been a subject of controversy since its release, and it has never had a home video release in the United States. Art from the development of the film is especially rare. Mary Blair took a research trip to Atlanta, Georgia where she created many plein air paintings of the rural Georgian landscape in preparation for the film, and the uncommon naturalism of this painting showcases her atypical realistic approach to the live action sequences. This piece is rendered stunningly in gouache and watercolor on watercolor paper. It measures 9" x 8", and it shows minor handling and edge wear. There are pinholes in the corners, and the condition is Very Good.
