    Description

Mary Blair Peter Pan London Rooftops Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1953). "That corner house over there is the home of the Darling family. And Peter Pan chose this particular house because there were people here who believed in him." Created for the title character's introductory scene in the 1953 Disney animated feature Peter Pan, this is a wonderful hand-painted piece of original concept art by Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). Daring use of bright green gives the piece a magical, glowing quality that simply could not be achieved by the hand of any other artist. This glow likely inspired the famous spooky shot in which we first see Peter Pan's face, lit by the glow of Tinker Bell (seen at the 10:37 mark of the film). On page 56 of The Art and Flair of Mary Blair, John Canemaker writes, "An impressive component of Blair's concepts for Peter Pan's world of pixies, pirates, and Lost Boys is her mastery of mood through dramatic lighting." We can't think of a better piece to drive that point home than this one. The green glow from the Mary Blair-signature full moon, the centered bright yellow light of the window drawing your eye, the shine of Tinker Bell (a rare character to find, in a Mary Blair piece no less!), all showcase her focus on lighting for the look and feel of Peter Pan. Rendered in gouache on 9.5" x 8.75" illustration board, the piece shows minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in the corners. The condition is Very Good.
