DescriptionMary Blair "It's a Small World" Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1964/66). "There is just one moon and one golden sun, and a smile means friendship to ev'ryone. Though the mountains divide and the oceans are wide, it's a small world after all." Presented is a hand-painted piece of original concept art for the famous "It's a Small World" Disneyland attraction by Disney Legend Inductee Mary Blair (1911-1978). A lovely painting created for the Mexico section of the ride, this is an atypically large piece for Mary Blair, measuring 14.5" x 10.25". Blair spent a decade away from Disney after her work on Peter Pan in 1955, and Walt Disney insisted on her contribution to "It's a Small World" in 1964. Fellow designer Rolly Crump said, "I think it hit her at the right time. It was a powerful package for her. It was about children, the freedom of color, and that Walt asked her to do it. Like she'd died and gone to heaven. ‘Small World' had to be the crescendo for her because I've never seen anything as powerful in her work. She just whipped this stuff out." A magnificent piece, it is rendered in gouache on illustration board, and it shows minor handling and edge wear with light debris. There are pinholes in the corners, and the condition is Very Good.
