Mary Blair It's a Small World Collage Design (Walt Disney, 1964). In recalling It's a Small World, Walt Disney Imagineering International Ambassador Marty Sklar said, "Walt remembered artwork of children for Saludos Amigos. He said, 'We have to get Mary Blair to do it,' so he called her!" WED Designer Rolly Crump goes on to say, "I think it hit her at the right time. It was a powerful package for her. It was about children, the freedom of color, and that Walt asked her to do it, like she's have died and gone to heaven." Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) is credited with introducing Modernist Art styles to artists at Walt Disney Studios. She used primary colors to form intense contrasts and color that can be unnatural to the image they are depicting. This lot showcases the genius of Mary Blair. It's simply an amazing hand-crafted, hand-colored cellophane collage used as a design for the It's A Small World World's Fair project. So many different colors and geometric shapes make up this detailed collage. You can see a one of her abstract act sculptures on page 168 in John Canemaker's book Magic, Color, Flair -- The World of Mary Blair. This is set on a board measuring 20" x 15". Almost the entire board is taken up by the image. We have seen only a few of these pieces surface to the market. Minor handling wear. Fine condition.
