Mary Blair Cinderella Original Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1950). "I give up" says the King as he watches the stepsisters arrive to meet his son. The Grand Duke then says to the King, "Suddenly he stops, he looks up... look, and there she stands. The girl of his dreams. Who is she, or where she came, he knows not, nor does he care. But his heart tells him, she is the one destined to be his bride." The Grand Duke does not know his fantasy speech is actually happening with the Prince and Cinderella at that very moment. Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) captures Cinderella's unannounced arrival perfectly in this concept painting. Brunettes dance with royalty and she in blonde hair arrives by herself. In Didier Ghez's great book Disney They Drew As they Pleased - The Hidden Art of Disney's Mid-Century Era (The 1950's and 1960's), Ben Sharpsteen is quoted on page 65 saying "When Walt decided to make Cinderella, he looked for practical ways to style it so that it would not be reminiscent of Snow White. He wanted to plus each picture -- he wanted to make every picture better than the last. So he looked for what he called styling in the picture. Styling often meant characters involved or also backgrounds. But in this case he was extremely anxious to get something of Mary Blair's natural talents into the character of Cinderella herself." Stunning one-of-a-kind concept painting of gouache on board measuring 9" x 8.5". Pinholes in corners, with minor handling and edge wear. Overall Very Good condition. Stunning example of Mary Blair's influence and work on this film.
