Mary Blair Cinderella Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1950). Impressive and eye-catching, this incredible concept painting for Cinderella by Mary Blair (1911-1978) is detailed, colorful, and HUGE, measuring 16.5" x 13". Cinderella, rendered in dull, muted colors offset by the pompous extravagance of her wicked stepmother's chateau, is depicted small and humble in the overwhelmingly domineering space of the room. Only the glow of the windows presents a subtle suggestion of the bright and warm outside world. Packing so much narrative into one image, this remarkable painting showcases not only Mary Blair's masterful understanding of color, lighting and composition, but also her uncanny ability to tell a full story with just a few strokes of a brush. A simply spectacular piece, the painting is rendered in gouache on illustration board, and a similar image can be seen on page 90 of John Canemaker's book Magic, Color, Flair: The World of Mary Blair. The board shows minor handling and edge wear, and there are pinholes in the corners. The condition is Very Good.
