    Mary Blair Alice in Wonderland Queen of Hearts Castle Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). Presented is a simply spectacular original concept painting of the Queen of Hearts' castle, featuring the Queen herself and ranks of her loyal playing-card guards. This stunning piece is created for the 1951 Disney animated masterpiece Alice in Wonderland by the hand of none other than the legendary Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). The uncharacteristically dull, gray sky is offset by the brilliant pinks of the castle, causing the structure to practically pop right out of the 9.5" x 9" illustration board. In an inspired bit of design, heart shapes make up much of the building. The contrast of the bright castle and its dull surroundings intelligently suggests a certain sinister quality, one of hidden malice despite appearances. Exemplary of the power Mary Blair commands with her colors, this piece epitomizes the reasons she is regarded as one of the greatest colorists of all time. It must also be noted the incredible detail in this piece that significantly informed the final film: The gray sky, the endless ranks of black and white playing cards, the iconic hedge maze. In style and color, it's all here! A must-have Mary Blair Alice masterwork, it is rendered in gouache and shows minor handling and edge wear. There are pinholes in the corners, and the condition is Very Good.
