    Description

Mary Blair Alice in Wonderland Concept Painting Original Art (Walt Disney, 1951). A stunning Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) concept art piece from Alice in Wonderland. In 1938, after the enormous success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Walt Disney revived an old idea of making an Alice feature and officially registered the title Alice in Wonderland with the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America. He then hired storyboard artists to develop the story and concept art for the film. However, Walt was not pleased with the results and felt the overall tone of the script was too grotesque and dark so the project was shelved. In 1945, shortly after WWII ended, Disney once again revived Alice in Wonderland. Background artist Mary Blair submitted some concept drawings for Alice. Blair's paintings moved away from the early sketchy illustrations by taking a modernist stance, using bold and unreal colors. Walt liked Blair's designs, and the script was re-written to focus on comedy, music, and the whimsical side to the book. Offered in this lot is one of Mary Blair's concept pieces. The artwork shows the White Rabbit and the Queen's guards in Mary Blair's whimsical style. This one-of-a-kind Mary Blair concept art piece is enclosed in a glass-fronted frame of 11.25" x 12.25" with a fabric covered matboard. The matboard has an aperture of 7.5" x 8.25". Frame sold as-is. Fine condition.
