Mary Blair Alice in Wonderland Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). There is perhaps no film more impacted by the rich, bold and colorful aesthetics of Mary Blair (1911-1978) than Disney's Alice in Wonderland. This is a jaw-dropping concept painting showcasing the White Rabbit and Alice herself at the Mad Hatter's tea party, encapsulating one of the most memorable Disney scenes of all time. Unbelievably rare, this piece created near the final stages of the concept process features the enormous red chair, the Germanic top-heavy design of the house (which may have also inspired the White Rabbit's house), and the all too iconic blue dress of Alice. Of adapting artwork from the original Lewis Carroll books, Mary Blair stated, "We did try to work in the technique of the [original John] Tenniel illustrations... Walt would not let us go completely in that direction..." Under Walt Disney's guidance, the stylings of Mary Blair brought the film's unforgettable design to the bright, flat colors showcased here. This gorgeous piece is rendered in gouache on 9.5" X 8.5" illustration board. The board shows handling and edge wear with some light debris/scuffing. There are pinholes in the corners, and the condition is Very Good.
