DescriptionMary Blair Alice in Wonderland Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). After the large success of Cinderella, Mary Blair then took on Alice in Wonderland. Her first work reportedly was done very early on, prior to storyboards and final scripts. It was said she relied first on the novels of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and the sequel Through the Looking Glass. Both featured detailed illustrations by the English artist John Tenniel. Her initial highly experimental first-pass art for this film supposedly did not please Walt Disney, and she re-shifted her strategy. This is a very early Mary Blair concept/color key of Alice. She is in her white dress with the blue trim. We have only seen one Alice Blair like this in the book Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland, retold by Jon Scieszka with pictures by Mary Blair. This same design is seen on page 14 where Alice in this book meets Tweedledee and Tweedledum. This early Mary Blair white dress design is believed to be from the same Twiddle Dee and Dum sequence of artwork. The artwork used in this book was mostly all from the Walt Disney Animation Research Library Archives. Very rare and very early concept. Gouache on illustration board of 6 1/2" x 5". Minor handling and edge wear with staples in corners. Very Good condition.
