Mary Blair Alice in Wonderland Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). "I'm tired of only being three inches high..." In an exciting combination of two scenes in one image, here is a wonderful original early concept painting from the surreal Disney masterpiece Alice in Wonderland, rendered beautifully in gouache on illustration board by none other than the legendary Disney concept artist Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). The scenes depicted here are that of Alice bursting out of the White Rabbit's house at the 22:09 mark of the film, and the 37:00 mark in which Alice grows above the trees, upsetting a bird who lives there. Capturing both memorable moments, this delightful piece exhibits Mary Blair's knack for creative visual storytelling using effective, bold splashes of color. Of her unique and adept sense of color, Disney Legend Inductee and one of Disney's "Nine Old Men" Marc Davis said, "[Mary Blair] was the most amazing colorist of all time. I don't think even Matisse could hold a candle to her-and I mean that very sincerely. She could put colors together and they would just sing." Reflective of Alice herself, this wonderful painting is LARGE, measuring 19.5" x 9". The piece shows minor handling and edge wear with debris and toning around the edges. There are pinholes in the corners, and the condition overall is Very Good.Auction Info
