Mary Blair Alice in Wonderland Alice with Roses Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). "That's nonsense. Flowers can't talk." To which a rose replies, "But of course we can talk, my dear." Alice waters a talking flower in this gorgeous original concept painting by the hand of Disney Legend Inductee Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). With Blair's signature flat, bold colors, this lovely image likely inspired multiple memorable moments of the final film. The talking flowers and the red roses of the hedge maze are present along with a circular golden sun common of Mary Blair's best illustrations. A remarkable work of color, detail and texture, the piece somehow creates a subtle illusion of depth without the use of linear perspective. Animation director Mick Gabriel admired Blair's uncanny prowess with color: "Primary color, secondary color with a complementary accent against a muted complement in the background. When you do that, [the image] sings like a million bucks." This spectacular piece demonstrates this exceptionally well, rendered in gouache on a large 19" x 9" illustration board. The board shows minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in the corners. The condition overall is Very Good.Auction Info
