Who Framed Roger Rabbit Roger Rabbit Preliminary Maquette (Walt Disney/Amblin, 1988). Walt Disney Productions purchased the film rights to Gary K. Wolf's novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit shortly after its publication in 1981. The title was changed to Who Framed Roger Rabbit and test reels were produced between 1982 and 1983. This mix of live-action and animation proved to be a challenging and expensive project that ultimately took nearly seven years to complete. During the early stages of this Disney/Amblin collaboration, the design of Roger looked considerably different than how the character appeared in the final production. Presented here is an original animation maquette of Roger Rabbit from the first stage of this iconic character's evolution. The hand-painted plaster-over-wire figure of Roger measures 10" x 7" on a 5" x 6.5" x .5" base. It's a fantastic pose that convey's Roger's manic energy and his facial features are an obvious nod Tex Avery's Screwy Squirrel. Few maquettes are made at this stage in a film's development and this is likely one of only a handful ever made. Due to its fragility it's likely even fewer exist today. This lot represents a very rare opportunity to own Disney studio pre-production maquette of a popular character from the dawn of it's inception. There is a beak in the character's neck and a crack in the right arm. The piece would benefit from minor restoration. Condition is Very Good.
