Description

Fantasia "Dance of the Hours" Madame Upanova Animator's Maquette (Walt Disney, 1940). This graceful, bow-wearing ostrich is one of the stars in the "Dance of the Hours" segment of Walt Disney's 1940 feature film Fantasia. The ballet-dancing ostriches can be found in the first sequence of "Dance of the Hours," sleepily awakening before they rise to their feet and perform a lovely ballet dance together. The ostriches are led by the lovely Madame Upanova, who appears in this early development maquette. The dancing ostriches also appear at the end of the segment, when Ben Ali Gator arrives on the scene with his crew of alligators. The ostriches are highly-memorable characters from the film, appearing in Disney commercials and productions even as far in the future as the 2000s series House of Mouse. This spectacular plaster-cast maquette used in the production of Fantasia served as a reference to animators. It allowed them to see the dancing ostrich from all sides as they animated the segment. The ostrich strikes a dramatic pose with her wings spread out and her head tilted back, a gentle smile on her face. The piece was repainted by Helen Nerbovig McIntosh (1915 - 1992), one of Disney's original maquette painters and Ink and Paint artists, who worked on maquettes during the time that this maquette was originally made. She has signed the piece on its base. The base is also numbered 6. The maquette measures about 8.75" tall! This wonderful, unimaginably rare piece is in Very Good condition, with minor handling and edge wear.
From the Disney Character Model Maquette Glad Collection.
