Madeline Paris at Night Painted Color Key Background (UPA, 1952). "In an old house in Paris covered with vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. In two straight lines they broke their bread and brushed their teeth and went to bed." This wonderful animation Color Key painting of Paris at night as an ambulance takes Madeline to the hospital, with the Eiffel Tower in the distance, was created by a UPA Studio artist in development of a scene in the animated cartoon directed by Robert Cannon. UPA produced the first film version of Ludwig Bemelmans' books for children, and the scene based on this painting appears soon after Miss Clavell awakens to find: "Little Madeline sat in bed, cried and cried her eyes were red." The doctor was called and he takes Madeline to hospital in a scene animated over a background nearly identical to this concept painting: "In a car with a red light, it drove out into the night."
This Jolly Frolics cartoon, distributed by Columbia Pictures, is a faithful adaptation of Madeleine, the first book in the series by Mr. Bemelmans. Art Heinemann is credited for design of the film and Jules Engel for color; this painting is likely the work of Mr. Engel. The art is in gouache, painted edge-to-edge on 12.25" x 5.25" board. There is a pinhole in each corner and one along the bottom edge, with minor handling wear. Very Good condition.
