Lost and Foundling Sniffles Production Cels (Warner Brothers, 1944). In this short by legendary Warner Brothers director, Chuck Jones, Sniffles the mouse wakes to find an egg in his house. He hatches what turns out to be a hawk and raises it to adulthood only for both to discover that mice are a hawk's preferred diet. Chuck Jones created the Sniffles character in 1939 and the chatty little guy went on to star in another 11 shorts throughout the '40s. The original design of Sniffles was made by Charles Thorson who was known for his work in designing "cute characters" for Disney's Silly Symphonies. This is an impressive one-of-a-kind set of two hand-inked, hand-painted production cels from Sniffles' penultimate theatrical appearance. One cel features a 6" x 5.5" image of him toweling off his freshly bathed hawk chick from the 2:30 mark. The other is an adorable 3.5" x 4.5" image of him sitting on the egg that is about to hatch at the 1:40 mark. This rare character is one of Chuck Jones' early successes at Termite Terrace and little original artwork of him exists today. Both cels share a common mat sealed with tape under Plexiglas and the 13'" x 20" mat has dual openings of 9" x 7". The 75-year-old cels show a couple of minor hairline cracks. Overall condition is Very Good. From the Rev Chaney Archives.
